The Place for Devops in Large-Scale Enterprises
An interesting discussion unfolded on LinkedIn this week, revolving around whether Enterprises are starting to implement Devops to overcome their technical challenges.
Devops is a relatively new concept designed to bridge the gap between what has been dubbed the “Wall of Confusion” between development and operations teams. Devops integrates the teams together, ensuring interdependence, communication and joint collaboration.
The question of whether Devops is expanding from its traditional spot in start-ups into the Enterprise arena was posed by Colleen Smith. The response was met with a resounding ‘ yes’ from field experts.
This new emerging reality was demonstrated best by Nokia’s Principal Engineer Oliver Hookins, who said:
At Nokia we are implementing DevOps. The secret sauce in this kind of situation is having very good, technical managers who can fight the cause in the political arena – getting the technical solutions right to get around things like rigid change control….
Other big players like Tesco, City Index, ICAP and Sears are also bridging the gap the “Wall of Confusion” and adopting Nolio’s application release automation solution, Nolio ASAP, to overcome technical challenges.
Toby Young, CTO of City Index, led the webinar “Devops for Agile IT Operations” demonstrating how City Index used Devops and Nolio ASAP to overcome the complexities of deploying and managing applications.
In the webinar, Toby Young says:
We found that half of the software delivery value chain was spent in deploying software through non production environments. As 95% of the releases we are doing are repeatable, we thought we could reduce that by about 50% through automation.
We’ve automated all our key services, including our environment refreshes – keeping QA in sync with production. It used to take us half a day to completely re-sync it, …it now takes us six minutes with Nolio’s automation.
