DevOps for Agile IT Operations – Joint Webinar with Ovum and Nolio

DevOps aims to deal with the complexity of deploying and managing today’s modern applications.

DevOps is a grassroots movement that has grown over the last 12 months and brings together traditional silos in the IT department: developers, operators, system administrators, release managers, network engineers and others.  Devops is very much an extension of the Agile movement, removing process bottlenecks and improving communication between the development and operations silos, resulting in applications being delivered better and faster and with less risk .

Puppet Labs acquires Marionette Collective orchestration framework

Puppet Labs, a provider of open source server automation software, has acquired The Marionette Collective, also known as MCollective, an orchestration framework that is also open source. Puppet Labs is buying the project’s intellectual property and will employ its founder and chief developer in a deal that we believe is indicative of further acquisition and consolidation around devops, the trend of enterprise application development and IT operations coming together as more organizations move to SaaS and cloud computing.

Devops vs. System Administrator

Dmitriy Samovskiy has an interesting post where he attempts to further explain the difference between a Devops and Sysadmin. Noting the main activities performed in an IT Operations environment, Dmitriy explains what belongs to the sysadmin and how devlops came to handle application specific tasks.

  • activities around hardware purchased from vendors
  • activities around software purchased from vendors (excluding software delivered as a service)
  • activities around software and infrastructure delivered from vendors as a service
  • activities around open-source and/or freely downloadable software
  • activities around software developed in-house

Using Application Ratings to Foster DevOps

Using Application Ratings to Foster DevOps
Last week I had the opportunity to have a hallway conversation with a CTO of a large software company about how the interactions between development and operations teams are changing. I asked his opinion on measuring the benefit of that collaboration. He noted while they did not have direct metrics for their teams, they found that having a rating system for applications under development did effect how developers approached their projects.
Their rating system incorporated the expected operational characteristics of an application. For example, applications that must be as resilient as possible had a different set of ratings than applications with asynchronous or long running transactions. He said that once their developers understood the rating system, operational requirements were considered more throughly during the design phase. Additionally, they were more receptive to using existing operational knowledge as they were building the application. The system helped operations teams because it clearly prioritized the business importance of specific operational characteristics, which enabled better proactive problem analysis and prevention.

Q&A: The Rise of DevOps - James Powell, ESJ.com

Applications are getting more complex, and so are the environments into which they must be incorporated and updated. Mistakes are inevitable, and scripts often aren’t enough to release and manage applications across the data center so they don’t disrupt operations. One solution: a new, cross-department approach. To get a better understanding of what’s driving the adoption of DevOps, we turned to Eran Sher, executive vice president of products and business development and co-founder of Nolio, an application service automation provider.

Application Service Automation: a helping hand in the data centre

On the face of it, the term application service automation (or ASA for the sake of this blog) appears to be one of those wooly IT industry terms used to describe some element of the so-called ‘operations’ team’s daily workload.

In practical terms, ASA comes down to automating application deployment, maintenance and management, which will typically involve remediation and recovery processes. Or to put it even more simply, a serious helping hand for data centre employees.
