I have always been a strong believer in automation. The countless benefits are clear and undeniable and I was pleased to see that Forrester Research, Inc. shares my passion for service management and application release automation. Analyst Stephen Mann outlines the business impact in his report “Sustain Service Management and Automation Funding” published on June 7, 2012.
According to Mann, the future of IT is in automation. IT infrastructure and operations leaders worldwide are already enjoying the benefits of:
- Reduced time-to-market
- Minimized (and often eliminated) human errors
- Reduced costs
- Fewer demands on resources
- More efficient use of highly skilled team members
Automation tools are constantly improving and providing more and more benefits. One such solution, as highlighted by Mann in his report, is Nolio’s Application Release Automation Platform. He focused specifically on City Index, a leading global provider of retail trading services, which was able to achieve agility with application release automation.
At City Index, half of its software delivery efforts were spent ‘pushing’ deployments across developments, QA and pre-production environments. The IT service delivery team needed a way to accelerate application deployments across environments without any additional staffing, resources or overhead.
There was a severe disconnect in the speed at which development was able to create applications versus productions ability to release. Any attempts to move towards agile processes were then null and void as production became the major bottleneck. By adopting application release automation, City Index was able to automate 90% of its release processes effectively eliminating the bottleneck.
